Full course description
How could we grow food in orbit or in a future lunar habitat, and what can these challenges teach us about farming on Earth? This online course explores the science and engineering of space farming, connecting plant growth, controlled environments and resource recovery with the practical challenges of producing food beyond our planet.
You will discover how lighting, climate, root conditions and sensors work together to support plant cultivation. The course also explores circular systems and bioregenerative life support, examining how water, nutrients, carbon and energy move through a growing system, what can be recovered and where limitations remain.
From urban farms and orbital gardens to concepts for lunar greenhouses, you will explore how different environments shape design choices. Through scientific examples, guided calculations and design activities, you will learn to question assumptions, assess evidence and consider the trade-offs behind proposed solutions. These analytical skills also help you evaluate sustainability claims about food production on Earth.
No specialist background is required. Learn at your own pace, build your understanding and explore what it could take to grow food beyond Earth.
